Many of the women who come to the vocational training center at Hope of the Nations have received very little schooling, so their options for work are limited, leaving them vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Making coasters is often one of the first things the ladies learn to do when they come to the training center and, over time, their skills grow and they move into sewing and jewelry making.
By learning basic trades like sewing and jewelry making (or even making coasters), the students are able to feed and support their families and provide schooling for their children.
